With cold & flu season upon us, we are doing our best to wash hands, drink lots of water, and keep the classroom fresh & clean and germ free! Our classroom supply of Clorox/Lysol wipes is almost gone. If you are able to make a donation of sanitizing wipes, it would be greatly appreciated. We have plenty of tissues at this time. Thank you!
I hope all of you found some time to snuggle up with a good book over break. I know I did! I would like to extend the due date for our Winter Break Reading Challenge to Monday, January 8th. Please return your hot cocoa reading logs by Monday so we can celebrate together with a hot chocolate reading party! Remember, each marshmallow counts for 15 minutes of time spent reading. I hope each of you had a very Merry Christmas and a fabulous start to 2018! I am so excited to get back to school and start a new year of learning together! See you bright and early on Thursday morning. Dress warm!

We look forward to celebrating with you! I have had several questions regarding A.R. in second grade. Here are a few answers to FAQs...
*Yes, your child can read at home and then test at school. I encourage all students to read 15-20 minutes every night as part of their nightly homework routine. If your child reads a book at home and would like to take an A.R. test (or check if there is an A.R. test), simply have him/her bring the book to school the next morning. *No, your child cannot access A..R. from home to take tests. *Individualized A.R. goals are set for each quarter. Goals are set based on each student's reading level and minutes read daily. *Your child must maintain an overall test average of 80% accuracy. *Once a child reaches his/her quarterly goal, they are added to our "Lunch Bunch" and get to join in me in the classroom for lunch. Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask! First quarter A.R. goals need to be met by Friday, October 13th. Keep reading! Just a reminder...
Tomorrow, Wed Sept 27th, is an 11:18 Dismissal. If your child's after school routine will change due to the early out, please send a note in his/her take-home folder. Thanks! Yesterday your child brought home his/her first Homework Log with assignments/practice activities for th week of September 25th.
A few notes... Please remember to sign the "Comments" box next to each assignment as it is completed. In addition to the daily assigned practice activity, please read together at least 15 minutes each night and record the book & minutes read at the bottom of the Homework Log. If you do not have internet access for homework, please send write a note on your child's Howework Log in the "Tech Tuesday" box. If applicable, I will send home an alternate activity. If no alternate is sent, please spend extra time reading together on Tuesdays. REVISION to original post... Let's try keeping Homework Logs in your child's take-home folder so they come back & forth to school daily. Please remember to sign each night after an assignment is complete. If you work ahead, you may sign ahead. However, Wonders reading books will only be sent home on the assigned evenings (generally Wednesdays). Be on the lookout in your child's take-home folder for our new Weekly Homework Logs. Homework will be assigned on Monday of each week Activities will be assigned for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, & Thursday nights. No weekend homework - but please take time to read together.
Homework will generally follow this pattern... Monday Math - flashcards, Xtra Math session, or skill practice page Tech Tuesday - a list of learning websites to visit will be provided Read-Aloud Wednesday - Wonders story of the week AND vocabulary pages Think-About-It Thursday - word problem, writing prompt, or spelling word practice Occasionally there will be an additional math review page come home on a day other than Monday if we have an upcoming topic test. *At times, if your child doesn't finish his/her work at school, I will sometimes stamp it with a homework stamp and have he/she finish it at home. This would be in addition to the activity listed on the log. You can keep the homework log at home (and send it back on Friday morning each week) or keep it safely tucked in your child's take-home folder for the week - ready to be turned in on Friday. Please sign next to each assignment (in the COMMENTS box) when the activity is completed. If you have a busy week and need to work ahead, that is fine. However, it is my intention to provide your child with one 10-15 minute skill practice activity for each day. In addition, please read with your child at least 15 minutes each night. For nightly reading, your child may read aloud to you, you can read to them, or you can partner read together. Please record the book titles & minutes read on your child's homework log. Thank you! If you ever have any questions, please drop me an email ([email protected]) or send a note in your child's take home folder. In second grade we use an awesome math website as part of our math center rotations. Happy Numbers is a subscription-based website that provides individualized math practice and tracks progress and accuracy of skills over time. I am so excited to be able to share this learning opportunity with your child at home. By simply entering their two-digit password, your child can access their school account from home for extra practice.
Simply visit www.happynumbers.com class code: 4279111 Please check your child's take-home folder for his/her Happy Numbers password. |
